Here's a thing every player knows but rarely says out loud: your playmat is the piece of art you look at most. The mat. Every land drop, every attack, every "wait, can I see that card again?" happens right on top of it.
That's why we're so excited about this one. Twelve pieces by artist David Lozeau are now part of the Nerd Gear playmat lineup, and every one of them is packed with color and character.
Who is David Lozeau?
David is a San Diego artist who puts a bold, modern Lowbrow spin on Día de los Muertos art. His world is full of skeleton musicians, Wild West bandidos, deep-sea creatures, and hot rods, painted in layered acrylic, gouache, and enamel with bright color and sharp, cartoon-style linework.
The result is equal parts whimsical and dark. His work celebrates life through skeletons, which sounds like a contradiction until you see it. Then it just makes sense.

Why this art works on a playmat
Some art looks great on a wall and gets a little lost on a table. Here's why we think David's style is such a natural fit for a playmat:
- Bold linework: his sharp, cartoon-style outlines give every character a strong silhouette.
- Bright color: layered acrylic, gouache, and enamel make for palettes with real punch.
- Big personalities: each piece tells a little story, which makes your mat a conversation starter at the LGS.
And every mat is built for real play, not just display:
- Smooth cloth top for easy card movement
- Non-slip rubber backing that stays put when the game gets heated
- Stitched edges by default to prevent fraying and add durability
- HD sublimation printing so colors pop and lines stay crisp
- Standard 14" x 24" size, made to order, with a choice of 2mm or extra-thick 3mm and a few finish options
