Every month, a different playmat design climbs to the top of the pile. Some months it's a brand new fantasy art drop. This month, it was a joke design that a huge chunk of the community apparently wanted to lean into on purpose. We pulled the real sales numbers instead of guessing, so here's what Nerd Gear players actually ordered the most in August 2026.
1. Cardboard (and Realistic Cardboard)
Nerd Gear's top seller in August wasn't a big fantasy illustration or an artist collab. It was a playmat printed to look exactly like a plain cardboard box, flaps and all. It's a wink at every player who's ever sleeved a proxy on an actual scrap of cardboard, and it turns out a lot of people want to embrace the joke instead of hiding it. The design comes in two finishes: the original illustrated Cardboard, and the newer, more photoreal Realistic Cardboard pictured above. Between the two, they outsold every other design in the shop by a wide margin last month.
2. My Town
My Town takes the classic kids' road-map play rug and runs it through a fantasy lens: winding roads, rolling green hills, a stone castle, a wizard's tower, and a red dragon curling around the edge of it all, packed with small details that reward a second look. 3. Toad Rider
Illustrated by Clint Cearley, Toad Rider is pure storybook fantasy: a small warrior riding a toad into battle, axe and shield ready, painted in the same warm, painterly style Cearley's brought to several of Nerd Gear's most popular designs. 4. Mr. Dom Tattoo
If your table's aesthetic leans more tattoo parlor than storybook, Mr. Dom Tattoo is the mat for you. It's a bold, high-contrast tattoo-flash-style design that stands out even from across the table, and proof that not every top seller has to be a fantasy scene. 5. Significant Vivi
Significant Vivi is one of our fan art playmats, an original illustration inspired by a classic RPG mage character (unofficial fan art, not affiliated with or endorsed by the source material's publisher). 6. Naiads
Naiads is Clint Cearley's darker side: a moody, gothic take on a water nymph, all murky pond water, lily pads, and pale, eerie linework. If your cube leans horror or your Commander deck is built around unsettling vibes, this one fits right in. Full details on the Naiads product page.
7. Concrete
Concrete brings an industrial edge to the table: a photorealistic print of raw, weathered concrete that looks like it was pulled straight off a construction site. It's a strong pick for anyone who wants their playmat to feel more like gear than decoration. Get a closer look at Concrete.
8. Quest
Quest closes out the list with another Clint Cearley scene: a small party of rodent adventurers, warrior, ranger, and rogue, setting out under a full moon with a campfire glowing behind them.
